As we come to the end of the year we begin to reflect on what has worked in 2014. What do we need to keep on doing to keep that growth going? What hasn’t worked and what do we need to start doing differently or what new things do we need to bring in?

As we have been having conversations with people in recent months there is a number of topics come out in terms of challenges for 2015. One of them is passive candidates. How do you attract passive candidates into the business? That is not a completely new topic, however, it is something that moving forward, people really need to start to address more proactively.

The topic for this week is about how do you look at engaging and connecting with those passive candidates. Actually, this week is about how not to.

Every week we send out an email to people and as you might expect it’s a marketing email with different ideas for you to be implementing. We get some acknowledgements back through automated systems and one of those automated responses really caught our attention this week and this is how not to use automation.

Automation is fantastic to help your marketing. There is lots that you can do positively but this is how not to do it. So we got this email back and if we think about attracting passive candidates and how to engage them, we need to think about doing it differently.

This particular email said “If you are a client, we will get back to you in 24 hours. If you are a supplier, we will reply to your email in 48 hours. If you are a candidate, upload your CV and then if you match any of our requirements we’ll get back to you…”, get this, “…. In 4 weeks time. So if you haven’t heard from us by 4 weeks, assume that you did not match any criteria that we are looking for.”

If I am a client and I am looking for a recruitment agency to help me pour in some new candidates, I’m looking for a response faster than 24 hours.

If I am a candidate, let’s say I’m one of these passive candidates, and I actually make a decision to respond to an agency and I get that response back, what would you think as that candidate I am likely to do? It is not going to be ‘pick up the phone and talk to that company’. It is going to be ‘let me go and find another company who will engage with me and have a conversation with me.’

So when you’re thinking about engagement, particularly with these passive candidates and we realize you need to use some time with this automated emails because you are deluged with CVs, think about the content of that email. You want to connect and engage so think about how you want to do that and how you want to encourage that candidate to actually pick up the phone and talk to you.

Think about automation. Think about the content of those automated emails. This is going to be a topic about passive candidates that we are going to revisit in the coming weeks.
