Comfort zones? An interesting topic.
Being comfortable is rarely a good thing when it comes to business or self-growth.
The world is changing and at an accelerated rate. Therefore if you aren’t in a position where you are growing you are naturally losing ground and shrinking whilst everyone else takes over; make sense?
Robert Allen the well-known author and entrepreneur is often quoted as saying;
“Everything you want is outside your comfort zone.”
Yep it sure is.
And we all know that this is true, don’t we? Those of us that have spent any time around children appreciate that we want the best for them. Often that will be cajoling them to ‘do’ different things to expand their awareness, experiences and opportunity.
For each brave step they take we punch the air and cheer them on why? Because we know what will be on the other side for them.
So what happens as we get older? We know the benefit of stepping out yet for some of us it seems to stop? Too grown up maybe?
In a business context this can cause problems.
In today’s competitive environment staying ‘stuck’ in your comfort zone really will spell disaster.
The challenge is our human neural wiring doesn’t help.
We are both students of human physiology and psychology. Over many years we have been studying how the brain works and what it means for business people like all of us when it comes to working on our ‘mindset’.
The good and not so good news about the human brain
The good news is that our brains are designed to look for patterns and then systematise them. The not so good news is that our human system also wants to conserve energy and keep us happy and safe.
You could call it a form of auto pilot control. The challenge is it means we aren’t learning new things and consequently when we do step out it feels uncomfortable.
So, when we step outside our comfort zone, our brain screams at us:
“Whoooooooo! Don’t go there. It might not work.”
With self-talk like that it can be hard to change what we are doing and then maintain the momentum.
It takes a conscious effort, to seek out new knowledge and to acquire new skills.
The question is are you stepping up and out? Imagine what will be possible when you do.
What we experience
As consultants, coaches and trainers we are exposed to many different recruitment business owners.
They are all successful.
The ones that are really moving the envelope are pushing themselves constantly outside their comfort zone and reaping the benefit.
One client who had never had an article on her website before we started working with her took action and followed our recommendation. Her website is now renowned in her sector as one of the best blogs to visit.
Another delivered her first teleseminar to 300 attendees and claimed her spot as an expert in her niche. The stories go on and on.
Were they nervous; yes. Has everything worked they ‘attempted’? No.
Are they further forward and making more profit….oh yes.
Why? Because they have more options. By stepping out they have found out what works and what doesn’t.
On our dominate your sector programme the guys are stepping out big time and being rewarded. It’s one of those universal laws, being brave and taking action reaps rewards.
What do you need to do?
The key step is to create an environment of continuous learning and experimentation. It’s the only thing that works.
1.Question everything you are doing
I suspect you have a couple of ways that you currently market your recruitment company; maybe more?
There are multiple different marketing strategies you could be doing. You might even get better results, with less effort. As a start ask yourselves these questions:
- How well do I really know my market?
- What would make the difference?
- How many channels do my candidates and clients use?
- What if I had one extra promotional campaign per quarter
2. Explore new ideas
What are you drawn to? What would you love to experiment with? What books have you read? What blogs do you visit (hopefully this oneJ)?
What webinars can you attend?
3. Act on something new consistently
Novel idea? Fact: It works.
Create a LinkedIn targeted advert. Boost a post on Facebook. Start a podcast. Write a white paper.
The opportunities to move forward are endless and so will be your rewards.
We are always out of our comfort zone; why not join us.
