Though I am quite creative, I am also a great lover of digital trivia; facts and figures. Something that came to my attention a few days ago was that 50% of the population is currently under 30.

That means that these are classic Gen Y or millennials and what is even more fascinating is they would sooner lose their sense of smell than lose their mobile device!

Today we are going to discuss how your market uses digital and how important that is going to be for recruiters moving forward.

Let’s explore a little more about this avatar (your ideal candidate or client) that you have created which we covered in a previous video.

This ideal candidate and client how are they using digital?

One of the reasons I want to concentrate on this specific topic is related to specific research I am carrying out for a Post-Grad course I am attending based on digital marketing.

Looking at some of the data from the different research websites it’s fascinating when it comes to the data and behaviour patterns you can find on your potential candidates and clients and who you want to attract.

There’s a great video online called Socianomics 2014. One of the facts it revealed is that 59% of people in the US have a smartphone. The majority of the listeners of this podcast are based within the western world whether that be the US, the UK, Europe, South Africa and from Australia and New Zealand. However, if you look at the type of environment then you are looking at nearly 60% of people using a smartphone. Just imagine the impact that will have on how you can communicate with them.

What is also interesting is 88% of people are on social networks. Maybe the penny is dropping for a lot of you out there. It’s not just LinkedIn but also other networks where you can reach out to them.

We all know that lots of people are on Facebook and of course, you can reach out to that market. There are different ways to do that which we will cover in another post.

World Population-How does your market use Digital

The data from the visual above still surprises me. When you look at the list of the world’s populations that no. 9 is LinkedIn which is where a lot of recruiters hang out or search for their candidates and clients.

Imagine if people are hanging out on a social network, you need to think about how they are specifically using digital and how you can connect with them.

If you have not been utilizing social media, you are not present there, you are not communicating and engaging with your audience, then you really need to take action on this as fast as you can because you do not want to get behind the pack.

The world is changing. There’s a law known as Moore’s Law about technology and the fact that ‘technology’ tends to speed up. The latest data says it doubles every 18 to 24 months.

The growth is exponential when you compare it to how businesses grow. Businesses cannot grow at that rate. As a general rule of thumb businesses cannot grow at that rate so you need to be thinking about how you are starting to embrace technology in your recruitment process and how a lot of other people use different recruitment technologies with regards to sourcing candidates.

It is okay to use those technologies but then how are you marketing you and your brand online? If you don’t have a social media strategy and one that is effective and working, then you are going to fall behind other recruitment organisations when it comes to attracting candidates.

We know that 50% of the world’s population is under 30. I know that means 50% is over, very logical of course. However, think about that 50% that is over and there are huge percentages of the population that don’t work over the age of 65 currently so just think about how you are accessing your market.

When it comes to these Gen Y people, they are under the age of 30. They are a huge growing population. How are you connecting with them? You’ve got to be thinking about social media. They still open emails of course and they use their smartphone all the time. If you haven’t got around to getting that website of yours smartphone friendly/responsive so that people can view it on an iPad then you need to start thinking about it now.

This is Denise with a short podcast to stimulate some thoughts and think about how is your market using digital. Are they on the social networks? I would suspect they are because I have just shared the data that says they are. If they’ve got a smartphone which a high percentage of people do, are you connecting with them through SMS text? Have you considered paid advertising on places like Facebook and LinkedIn?

It helps to have a strategy for this; have you got one?

We can help you with this and you might even qualify for financial support from the government if you reside in the UK. Want to know more give us a call on 01539 898 698.
