STOP! Before You Outsource Your Marketing

Today I wanted to jump on with this short video. We’ve been doing a webinar with some clients this morning, and a really valuable topic of conversation came up that I wanted to share. Now, you’re all busy recruitment business owners, and of course time is precious, everybody’s time is short these days, so it’s natural isn’t it to think when it comes to marketing, let’s get some help, let’s outsource, or let’s look at who we can use in the team to do some of our marketing internally.

Now the key thing here is it’s very easy when you’re time precious to get someone else to do some of the marketing that you want doing. Now, I believe that before you even think about getting someone else to do some of your marketing; that as a business owner, it’s important for you to learn about marketing first. Here’s why: It’s really difficult to ask someone, whether it’s outside your business or inside your business, to do specific elements of your marketing if you don’t know what it is that you want them to do, and you don’t have a good understanding about what’s involved in the details of that process.

This doesn’t mean to say that you end up doing it yourself, but you do need to have a really good understanding of what you’re asking someone else to do. Here’s why: If you outsource it and you don’t have that understanding, it’s really difficult to manage that person, and also it’s very easy to have some quite unrealistic expectations of what the result should be. I’ve often had conversations with business owners who have outsourced and then have been really disappointed with the kind of results they got, and it comes down to the fact that they haven’t really understood what they’re asking someone to do, their expectations are quite unrealistic, and so everybody kind of gets disheartened.

As a business owner, you’re not getting the results that you want, and whoever the provider is, they’re disheartened because they’re not able to deliver and have a happy client. And of course, when you’ve got somebody inside the business who you’re managing from a performance point of view, it’s really difficult to manage someone if you don’t have that depth of understanding about what you want them to do, and to be able to perform and manage them in that way.

Now, I guess when you think about it, when you were a biller in the early days, you knew exactly what you were doing, you had all the processes in place, and only when you’d mastered, it did you then bring in other people. It’s the same principle when it comes to your marketing. So, I’d strongly encourage you before you think about outsourcing, because your time’s short;to learn a bit more about marketing, learn the detail of what it is that you want, what strategies work, what’s involved in that, then you can ask someone outside the business to support you, or you can have someone inside the business do that.
