Hi there listeners! This is Denise from Super Fast Recruitment. Today’s podcast has a slightly different topic. The topic is ‘six degrees of separation’. You may have seen the film. You may have read books on this subject. What the premise is that all of us across the universe are connected to one another more closely than we actually appreciate and that potentially by six steps, we are all connected.

Whether you believe that or whether you don’t, it is a good mindset to take into your business life. To give you an example just recently we were at a marketing strategy day with one of our new growth accelerator clients and we were talking about LinkedIn and who should we connect with, who we shouldn’t connect with and that if you are a high connected individual then someone wants to connect with you and they want to get into your network. However, there is a different mindset around this.

Obviously from a perspective on LinkedIn depending on whether you’re a brand new recruiter or you’ve been around for some time, then you want to make sure that your connections are over 500 because that is a great way of demonstrating social proof. So if you are not at 500 then it is a great way to actually ensure that you are able to connect with people.

What we would always suggest to people is you just never know what networks people are connected to and I’ll can tell you a story about this with a networking group that I was a member of a number of years ago. One of the chaps there was sitting on a table with somebody and he basically did all the sort of point of sale items – so pads, pens, all that sort of thing and he was sitting next to a chap and this gentleman said “Oh my wife’s actually a buyer for an organisation and maybe I could put you in contact.

For this chap Carl, his visit to that meeting proved to be lucrative for him because that particular chap was married to a lady who was the chief buyer in Sky. For a number of years, Carl ended up being able to provide point of sale items to the whole Sky organisation.

It was just a small thing I wanted to talk about today because I really think it is relevant in being open to people and networks and possibility. So before you hit delete when someone comes along they want to connect with you, it might be worth having a look at their profile and then just making a valued decision on “I wonder if this person might be a connector for me”.

This is Denise from Super Fast Recruitment with something different for your thoughts today and that’s ‘Six Degrees of Separation’.
