So this morning I got up, got in the shower, went downstairs, made a cup of coffee, sat down, put my earphones in and listened to some meditation music – a pattern that I do every day. Once I’ve done that, I grabbed hold of the dog and drag her around the village.
It’s a pattern I do every day because it helps me get focused. I get some fresh air, then start to think. I sit down at the desk and then I start writing and doing things for clients. It’s a pattern that I have. It’s a human trait this pattern thing and if you can leverage that then it can make a huge difference for you and your marketing. So that’s the subject of today’s podcast that we are going to get into.
Today is all about rituals and habits and that pattern that we have as human beings in performing routines because they work for us in our lives. It’s how we set things up. It’s how things work. For those of you that are interested in this topic. There’s a great book by a guy called Tony Schwartz. This book is titled “The Power of Full Engagement”. I found it really quite inspirational when I went through it.
So what’s this thing about rituals and habits? Well, it’s a well-known phenomenon that you can develop and you can change habits by consistently doing something for approximately 30 to 35 days. There’s a lot of research online about this. Originally this started when people were going up into space, it was how they managed to switch some of that patterning around floatation and gravity.
So what’s the relevance for you and your marketing? Well, it’s about consistency and commitment. One of the key powers of influence from Robert Cialdini’s work that we mentioned in the past is consistency and commitment. A lot of people say “I started my marketing then but it just does not happen.” So what about if you had some form of strategy where you do something consistently?
Obviously you can outsource most of your marketing. That’s what we do for people. But also there comes a point where you will have to be involved and you have to do certain things. One of the things I encourage our clients to do and get their consultants to do, for instance let’s use LinkedIn as an example, if they are on LinkedIn, obviously they may be searching for candidates, looking at what’s going on, but they could have a strategy where every day they decided that they’re going to spend at least 10 or 15 minutes a day marketing themselves and marketing their organisation, and it’s really easy to do.
Some of the things they could do is sharing one of their client’s blog posts or comment on something that one of their clients is doing or one of their clients has shared because that will appear in your client’s feed. To be engaging on LinkedIn is very easy to do. Every day I go on to LinkedIn and I will click ‘Like’ on a number of posts that are coming through my feed. There may be recruitment companies that we are targeting that we would love to start working with so I want to get on their radar.
So I would do that and that would be something I would build into my day. It would be a ritual. It will be a habit.
One of the things that we do – like recording these podcast later in the evening, is a habit I have of because I am relaxed then. Whatever I have been doing during the day will have stimulated some ideas. I might have had a conversation with a client about something. For instance this particular podcast has come from a conversation I have had with a client around ‘time to do things’. It was a coaching call and we were talking about how to improve their engagement and what they could do to add into the process and now we are talking about setting up a ritual.
So that’s what I did and often what happens is I will schedule some time at the end of the day to record a podcast. I know that part of my ritual is on certain days of the week, I will record a podcast and I make it happen. By doing that I don’t get overwhelmed.
Today’s podcast was quite a short one but it’s all about rituals. What rituals could you put into place that might help your marketing. Is it about the fact that you go into LinkedIn with the mindset of engagement or with the mindset of “This is about marketing”? This is about branding myself rather than just searching for somebody which is obviously a facet of your job or picking up the phone, but going to LinkedIn. Ten minutes here, I’m going to market me, I’m going to market my desk and I’m going to market my organisation to brand me.
So that’s the subject of today’s podcast and as always you can download it and there are some show notes as well. So this is Denise saying bye for now!
